| For some people, walking is their only bit of ‘me time’ when they get to mull over things and relax without kids, spouse or the boss nagging at them. |
| Others enjoy walking for not only the health and fitness benefits but also the social aspect – catching up with old friends and maybe making a few new ones. |
If you want to walk alone... |
| Don’t try any long or difficult routes on your own | | Make sure you have a map etc in case you get disoriented |
| Make sure you have the right (and sufficient) clothes and supplies for the estimated length of the walk |
| Be prepared to change your route if you begin to feel unsafe, wherever you are | Carry a stick, walking pole, mobile phone or personal alarm | Make sure somebody knows where you are going and when you will return | Avoid using a personal stereo if it makes you less aware of your surroundings | Always walk facing oncoming traffic | Don’t wear jewellery and always carry some identification |
|
If you want company... There are many walking clubs that cater to all different sorts of people. Check out our list and see what ones appeal to you. Go on an introductory walk before joining to make sure it really is right for you. |
| By all means advertise or answer ads for a walking partner but NEVER meet them on your own for the first time. Make sure you take along a trusted friend and take a walk where there are lots of walkers or joggers. | NEVER give out your home address or phone number | Not everybody likes to walk at the same pace, or at the same time of day as you. It may take time to find the right walking partner. Maybe your spouse or a neighbour will do just fine for now. |
