Conventional wisdom tells us that anyone who is overweight MUST be unhealthy and unfit. Conversely, all the skinny mins out there are super fit and healthy. But is this true? A recent study by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York has shown that it ain't necessarily so! | They surveyed and examined 5,440 men and women over a 5 year period, most of whom did not exercise very much. They found that just over 51% of those who were overweight, and 31.7% of those who were obese had healthy levels of cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure and other measures linked to heart disease. | The researchers also found that more than 23% of people who were classed as a healthy weight, as measured by our friend BMI, had 2 or more unhealthy readings. They believe it isn't how much fat you have, but where you store it that is the problem. Having visceral fat in and around your organs may actually be more unhealthy than fat thighs or buttocks. Fat on the liver is thought to be a big problem - just remember the goose and his pate! |
