WALK DESCRIPTIONGETTING THERE & BACKACCOMMODATIONBEST TIME TO WALK

DESCRIPTION:

The Great Ocean Walk takes in 91 km of Victoria's spectacular west coast, beginning in the resort town of Apollo Bay and ending at Glenample Homestead which is near the giant rock formations known as the Twelve Apostles.
You don't have to walk the whole way - there are lots of day walks and 1/2 day walks too.

THERE:
A daily bus service between Geelong, Lorne and Apollo Bay connects with Melbourne train services. For V/Line Country Train Information call 13 6196

BACK:
A daily bus service between Geelong, Lorne and Apollo Bay.

FACILITIES:
There are toilets at camp sites.

Take all your own food, tents and cooking equipment including fuel stoves as camp fires are not encouraged.

BEST TIME: December to March is the most popular time. All overight hikes must move in an east west direction. This is to maximise the availability of tent sites for campers and to maximise views.
HOW HARD IS IT REALLY?
Sections of the Great Ocean Walk take you along beaches and rock platforms which may be dangerous or impassable at high tide or during large ocean swells. The main route follows inland bypass tracks, with a beach track option if walkers decide it is safe.

FOOD & WATERCLOTHINGBOOKS & MAPSSAFETY

FOOD:
Independent walkers must take all their own food. Supplies are available from towns along the way.

WATER:
Drinking water is not available along the track. Tanks at campsites hold untreated rainwater. Use it wisely.
If ever in doubt about the water quality see
Lots of sun and wind. Wear appropriate clothing.

TRACK FEES:
Charges payable for camping on the Great Ocean Walk tent sites are $20 per individual camp pad, per night (plus a processing administration fee of $5 per application).
Book at least 2 weeks in advance.

+  CLOSEST HELP?
Apollo Bay and towns along the track from which to summon help.
Water safety & River Crossings
Many beaches are exposed to tides and unseen dangers such as ocean currents, rips and reefs. Beaches are not patrolled along the Walk. Parker and Johanna Rivers are unbridged. Hikers may need to wade across rivers. Only attempt to walk along the coastline during low tides and calm sea conditions - you must decide.
